  • Christmas in July Festival:  Come celebrate Independence Day weekend, at the annual Christmas in July Festival in West Jefferson! There will be live music on the main stage, food vendors, merchant booths, and various performances such as clogging on the community stage. And you just might run into Santa and Mrs. Claus!   • Todd Liberty Parade and Concert:  The Todd Liberty Parade is known for its fabulous costumes and inclusiveness – anyone can join in the parade! Costumes made by Elkland Art Center are available for all to wear at the parade start, so come early and get decked out if you want to join in. At 11:00, the parade winds its way through downtown Todd ending at Cook Park with music, dancing and food. Whether you walk in the parade or watch in, you’re in for a one-of-a-kind experience celebrating America.

  • 4th of July Fireworks Celebration:  Come to Ashe Park to celebrate Independence Day with us! Shuttles will be picking up at the Ashe County Courthouse starting at 3pm. Fireworks to start at dark. Happy 4th everyone!

  • Neal Hellman Dulcimer Concert:  Neal Hellman is an American folk musician, music teacher, and performer of the mountain dulcimer. He has been active in performing, writing, teaching and recording acoustic music for the past thirty years throughout the United States and Europe.

    • Gallery Crawl:  Downtown West Jefferson comes alive after five with open house at seventeen galleries and shops. New artwork, exhibits, refreshments, music and more.   • Barn Quilts and Beyond” Quilt Fair   After two years of absence, The Ashe County Piecemakers Quilt Guild will be holding a Quilt Fair this year! The event will be held at Westwood Elementary School on Friday, July 21st, 10am-6pm and Saturday, July 22nd, 10am-4pm. In addition to our display of quilts, there will be vendors selling interesting tools, gadgets, and fabric. There will be a drawing each day, some of the prizes are: a framed picture by Lenore Dupree and the grand prize a Sewing Machine (on Saturday). Admission: $5.

  • Hickory Jazz Orchestra     The Hickory Jazz Orchestra (HJO) is a full size 18-piece group that performs swing and big band classics from the era of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and Duke Ellington as well as the sounds of modern big bands.

  • Tubing at Two   On these hotter days of summer, stop by the New River State Park 221 access to enjoy the river’s cool waters. Meet at the bottom parking lot of the 221 river access at 2 p.m. for a brief ride. Be sure to wear clothes you can get wet and sturdy water shoes. Tubes will be provided free of charge. 2:00 – until.

  • Ken Kolodner Trio   Hammered dulcimer player and old-time fiddler, Ken Kolodner has joined forces with his son, Brad Kolodner on clawhammer banjo to perform tight and musical arrangements of original and old-time music. Ken and Brad will be joined by bass player Alex Lacquement.

  • Ashe County Bluegrass & Old Time Fiddlers Convention   Ashe County Bluegrass and Old-Time Fiddlers Convention Ashe Park. Friday night Barn Dance with Whitetop Mountain Band. Saturday the Gary Poe Bluegrass Radio Show live onstage at 11:00 with Strictly Strings. Competitions starts at noon. Band competitions at 7:30 pm.   • Ashe County Studio Tour:  Summertime in the mountains – what better way to see the countryside than on a two-day Studio Tour! On August 5-6 the Ashe County Arts Council will sponsor the Ashe County Studio Tour, a two-day, self-guided, free event in which Ashe County artists open their studios to the public. Tour participants will discover art studios located all over the county. Most of the studios are not usually open to the public, so this is an opportunity for people to see where artists work and what they create.

  • Community Potluck Dinner and Old Time Dance: Tonight the Todd Mercantile will be hosting its May Community Potluck Dinner and Dance. It all starts at 6pm with the potluck! Bring a dish to share and something to drink (or you can get something from the Merc). After dinner, we’ll break down all the tables and chairs and commence to get our feet a tappin’ and doing a little do-si-do-ing to the tunes of our live band! If you ain’t well versed in dancing – pay no never mind – you’ll get schooled on each dance before

  • Church Basement Ladies: A celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there, Church Basement Ladies is a musical comedy featuring four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1965. From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen to the young bride-to-be learning the proper order of things, we see them handle a record breaking Christmas dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, a Hawaiian Easter fundraiser, and a steaming hot July wedding. They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the Pastor on course while thoroughly enjoying, (and tolerating) each other as the true backbone of the church. Funny and down to earth, audiences will recognize these ladies as they witness the church year unfold from below the house of God.

  • West Jefferson’s Annual Antiques Fair:  Whether you like furniture from the 1800s, war memorabilia, or classic records from “back in the day” – you just might find all that and more at the West Jefferson Antiques Fair! It’s a great event for the whole family! If you can’t make it Friday the 15th 1pm-8pm, the fair will still be open Saturday the 16th 8am-5pm. Stroll the streets of historic downtown West Jefferson and find a unique treasure you simply can’t live without!
